The OOhh collection incorporates the nature and the environment into Scandinavian designs by a Danish company Lübech Living. OOhh is designed to surprise and inspire.The design, the recycled materials and the composition are supposed to bring out the ‘OOhh’, ‘Aha’ reaction, which enriches our life and bring joy to our soul & home.

The goods are made in a fair trade project in Sri Lanka. The project offers less priviledged women the opportunity to take care of their children and house whilst making an income working at home. One of the important principles is that the women are paid the same price per product, independent of the number of items made per week – this in respect and understanding of the role as a mother and housewife, where unexpected tasks can occur during the week.

The collection is made from recycled material only. Primarily used materials are recycled paper as well as eco-felt, a fabric made from recycled plastic, as well as off cuts from mahogany wood as well as Kurundu wood. The pottery collection is coated with a natural latex inside making the vessels 100% waterproof. On the outside the handling is done with a wide variety of recycled materials as well as natural materials as; sand, wood dust, cement, cut-offs from the textile industry.

Length 14 - 15 cm, width 9 - 10cm. Bowls are hand-made and there are small differences in measures and colour of stone.

Background of material

The Kenyan soapstone, Kisii stone, comes from the Tabaka Hills of Western Kenya. It is carved by hand, then given the final touch with sand paper and water. Kenya is globally known of these Kisii soap stone decorations and kitchenware. The soft surface makes you want to touch and feel the material again and again!

Why is this item a sustainable choice?

Kikoi -products are made in Africa, in cooperation with Finnish women who have fair-trade & charity production and support of women’s rights and entrepreneurship in their core values. The women have also visited the production sites. Traditionally, raw materials have been imported away from developing countries leaving thus very little value to the country. Kikoi -production gives jobs to local people, and supports especially employment of women.

Product background

In Ukamban village the women of Kamba tribe weave different kinds of sisal baskets by hand. The group of women is called 'Sisal Sisters'. With the income the weaving provides they support their own family, as well as orphan and poor children of the village. By purchasing this product you also support the women in maintaining the Kamba tribe weaving tradition.

The long sisal fiber is extracted from the outer leaves of the sisal plant (species of Agave) by hand. This is done by crushing and beating the leaves with blunt knives so that only fibres remain. No chemical fertilizers are used in the sisal farms. No hard-metals are used in the dyeing process of Kikoi sisal baskets to ensure that the production of our colorful baskets doesn’t harm the Kenyan nature.
